# D.C. and U.S. island maps

Source: [U.S. Census Bureau, 2025 cartographic boundary files](https://www.census.gov/geographies/mapping-files/2025/geo/carto-boundary-file.html), 1:500,000 state and equivalent entities. [Original KML ZIP](https://www2.census.gov/geo/tiger/GENZ2025/kml/cb_2025_us_state_500k.zip). Checked 7 September 2026. This is U.S. government source geometry, not an ODbL-derived dataset.

The D.C. regional window covers −77.17 to −76.85° longitude and 38.78 to 39.03° latitude. Virginia and Maryland continue beyond the frame. Statistical boundaries are not a land-cover or local hydrography model.

Five north-up Mercator insets use separate scales. Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam retain their source island groups. The Northern Marianas close-up displays Saipan, Tinian and Rota; American Samoa displays Tutuila and Aunuʻu. Outer islands beyond those two close-ups are omitted from the displayed map. Panel placement does not give real direction, distance or relative area.

Outlines are simplified for learning. Labels indicate jurisdictions, not verified landmark pins. Raised shapes distinguish boundaries and do not model elevation.
